VENEZUELA’S BREATHTAKING AUDACITY – by Ralph Ramkarran – (maps added)

VENEZUELA’S BREATHTAKING AUDACITY

Venezuelan claims

Venezuelan claims – click to enlarge

Venezuela’s proclamation of its “Atlantic Coast” on May 27, which includes all of Guyana’s maritime space, having already maintained since 1962 its fictional claim to two-thirds of Guyana’s land territory, is breathtaking in its audacity. Venezuela’s claim violates the Geneva Agreement and international law and threatens the peace, security and stability of the Region.

Oblivious to this fact, the heirs to Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s late, transformative leader, have damaged the credibility of his legacy. They are attempting to take by force, and at Guyana’s expense, the Atlantic outlet they have always craved and with it Guyana’s newly discovered petroleum resources.   Continue reading

Sugar Industry in trouble…Booming rice sector could still go bust – Dr. Clive Thomas

Those economic time bombs…Booming rice sector could still go bust – Dr. Clive Thomas

Economist, Dr. Clive Thomas

Dr. Clive Thomas

JUNE 14, 2015 | BY |Given his analysis of the economy and its revenue earners, local economist Dr. Clive Thomas believes that while the rice market may be booming at this point, certain factors affecting it, leaves the industry poised for a dispiriting future. He believes that it could very well be on the brink of a collapse.

In his recent writings, Dr. Thomas opined that while the sugar commodity life cycle for Guyana is in long-term decline, rice has been in a marked upswing. Contrarily, he said, “The ticking time-bomb that rice is perched” on is due to three factors. He listed these to be explosive growth of output, increasing difficulty in finding lucrative markets and the level of unit production costs.  Continue reading

The PPP central executive and the ‘Gang of 8’ – Letter by Cheddi (Joey) Jagan (Jr)

The PPP central executive and the ‘Gang of 8’

Stabroek News- June 15, 2015  In Letters: by Cheddi (Joey) Jagan (Jr)

In my recent letters, I have alluded to the PPP’s Gang of 8, and so as not to have the public confused, let me now name the Gang: Mr Jagdeo, Dr Luncheon, Mr Ramotar, Mr Rohee, Ms Teixeira, Mr Zulfikar Mustapha, Dr Frank Anthony and Mr Kellawan Lall. These persons constitute a majority in the central executive of 15 members and they stick together like crazy glue, outvoting and outvoicing the other 7 members, who fall in line with the ‘yes-man’ syndrome.

The ultimate and only decision-making body in the PPP is this central executive which is akin to the traditional communist politburo, and which could be found in the whole communist world before its collapse.  Continue reading

Irfaan Ali

Irfaan Ali

June 14, 2015 | By The Ministry of Communities has launched a major investigation into the operations of the government-run Scrap Metal Unit and a bank account containing almost $200M that was under the control of the former Minister, Irfaan Ali.

The unit, once controlled by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Commerce, was placed under Ministry of Housing during the tenure of the previous administration. It was tasked with collecting fees and monitoring the scrap metal industry.
It is how that unit ended up under the control of former Minister Irfaan Ali and a senior staffer, Taslim Baksh that has the new Government perplexed and extremely curious.   Continue reading
