On May 26, 2015, the people of Guyana will be celebrating their forty-ninth independence anniversary under the new leadership of a multiracial coalition government. After forty-nine years of racial divisive politics, the nation embarks on a new beginning of a more inclusive government.

At the recent swearing-in of eight Cabinet Ministers, Guyana’s newly-elected President David Granger told those present: “We are determined to bring good governance back to Guyana. We are determined to have a Cabinet which is committed to National Unity.”

As with several new beginnings, expectations run wild; dreams hang within reach like ripening fruit on a mango tree; hope is born anew.

Those of us who have entered adult life and have already experienced new beginnings as a married couple and as newbie parents know the challenges each new beginning brings to our lives…

Ministry re-established, new ministry named in minor cabinet shuffle

 The Ministry of the Presidency Thursday announced the re-establishment of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the establishment of a new one called the Ministry of Telecommunications.

Making the official announcement that Minister of Tourism, Catherine Hughes will now be named Minister for Public Telecommunications, while maintaining Ministerial responsibility for Tourism, President Granger said, “The reason is that after seven months, we detected a gap that there is no single spokesperson in the National Assembly, a Ministerial spokesperson, dealing with the digital economy [and] dealing with information technology. So we decided that it was necessary to have a Minister responsible for information and communication technology.”

Additionally, the Ministry of Governance and the Protection of the National Patrimony is being renamed the Ministry of Natural Resources.  Minister Raphael Trotman will now be named Minister of Natural Resources.    Continue reading

It is brutal, heartless and disgraceful and it happens in oceans of despair.  It has been called slavery of the 21st century, an emergency and a crisis that defies description. The Mediterranean boat crisis continues to grab the attention of the world as politicians scramble to devise solutions. There was a time when the boats ferrying souls seeking a better life would disappear in the seas with little thought given to them. But these are modern times with the social media bringing to our doorsteps the plight of the boat people.

Can the world show compassion to a segment of the population that is asking for a second chance? This may appear to be a simple question but in reality the boat crisis is interwoven with politics, wars, poverty and countries seeking to secure their borders at all costs.  The problem of the boat people has not just arrived at the door of Europe. It has a history written with the indelible ink of cruelty that began in the developing world.   Continue reading
