Govt. facilitates Chinese takeover in mining, logging and commerce – Businessman

 (APNU+AFC) coalition, local businessman, Jacob Rambarran, said, recently, that too many incentives are being granted to foreign investors while Guyanese are left to fend for -+themselves on an unleveled playing field.

According to him, more than or equally disturbing is the fact that the government looks out for friends and families of those in ruling positions. Foreigners are being allowed to gain more from the country’s natural resources than born and bred Guyanese, he added.  He said that Chinese nationals have control of the logging industry, the gold mining industry and have a firm grip on commerce.

Beneath Yellowstone’s surface, seismologists at the University of Utah have discovered a huge reservoir of hot, partly molten rock – more evidence that Yellowstone with its earthquakes and geysers is a ‘supervolcano.’

Scientists and tourists have always known that Yellowstone National Park featured lively geologic wonders – regular small earthquakes and two-thirds of the world’s geysers, including Old Faithful – all constituting what’s known as a “supervolcano.”

Now, seismologists at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City have made a new discovery about Yellowstone’s subsurface plumbing, specifically a reservoir of hot, partly molten rock more than four times larger than the shallower magma chamber that scientists already knew about. To give that some perspective, the newly discovered reservoir would fill the Grand Canyon 11 times, compared with 2.5 times for the shallower chamber. Continue reading →

I’ve always been a big believer that the ancient fruits and vegetables found in ancient religious and biblical texts have a special role to play in our diet.

Not only did our early ancestors enjoy them, but most of them have special medicinal value that has helped protect against disease for thousands of years.

Take okra. Also known as bhindi, lady’s finger and gumbo, okra is a nutritional powerhouse used throughout history for both medicinal and culinary purposes.  Once loved by the Egyptians and still used in many dishes today (such as the famous Southern American gumbo dish), this pod-producing, tropical vegetable dates back over 3500 years.

Now in China 50m ‘guanggun’ – ‘bare branches’ – look doomed to bachelor-dom, while in India 500 year-old laws are being revised to allow men to marry out of caste, village and state.
