Six years after maintaining absolute silence on allegations of domestic abuse leveled against him former President Bharrat Jagdeo has said that despite numerous claims being circulated he never resorted to physical violence against his ex-wife, Varshnie Singh.

Jagdeo, who spoke out in defence of women, yesterday, stated that the only act of physical violence against women he had ever been involved in was when he was a lad of 10 years and had tussles with his older sisters.

He made these remarks during a press briefing at Freedom House, Robb Street, on April 22.  At the time, he was asked about Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran’s confrontation with a female activist on Monday April 20.   Continue reading

On Monday, the Health Minister of Government Dr. Bheri Ramsaran created quite a stir during a confrontation with a female protestor (Ms Sherlena Nageer), outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court. In the process he demonstrated the kind of arrogance that Government Ministers and officials exhibit these days.

Indeed, this is not the first time that a government official will be confronted by a member of the public and lose his temper, neither will it be the last. The opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+ AFC) is promising a 20 percent salary hike for all law enforcement officers in the first year, and a crack down on white collar crime, drug trafficking and illegal guns.

With the starting salary of constables just around GY$60,000 (US$300), the coalition hopes that an initial 20 percent hike in salaries will be among several measures that will help policemen and women go after criminals. “Public security is the bedrock of a safe human society and the crime situation is both the most pressing and most depressing problem facing ordinary Guyanese today,” says the grouping in its 44-page manifesto.   Continue reading
