West Indies draw first Test against England – in Antigua

NORTH SOUND, Antigua — Jason Holder struck a superb maiden first-class and Test century to guide West Indies to a hard-fought draw in the first Test against England at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground on Friday.

The 23-year-old six-footer played a match-saving innings under great pressure to finish 103 not out off 149 balls with 15 fours in 3 1/2 hours. West Indies got support from a crowd of over 9,000 and batted close to 130 overs in their second innings to close on 350-7 after being set 438 to win.

Holder earned the Man-of-the-Match award and shared a resolute seventh-wicket stand of 105 with captain Denesh Ramdin, who made 57 off 141 balls. Continue reading

A Guyana-born American, who has previously eluded efforts to extradite him to the United States (US) , was Thursday arrested after more than 100 kilos of cocaine and a sum of Guyanese currency were allegedly found in his possession.

He has been identified as Barry “Mogatini” Dataram. Back in 2008-2010, Dataram engaged in several successful legal maneuvers in Guyana’s High Court to prevent him from being extradited to the US to face drug trafficking charges.  Continue reading

Anticipations were high for the much-touted grand opening of the Marriott Hotel at Kingston, the first of its kind in these parts. It was supposed to be a major project initiated by the former administration and now being completed by the Donald Ramotar government.

Ahead of the May 11 general elections, it was expected to be a proud moment. But the expected spectacular event complete with pomp and fanfare fizzled yesterday, falling short of expectations.  Continue reading
