Small, medium bands shine at Queen’s Park Savannah

Crack went the whip of the lead whipmaster, furiously pelting lash at the stage. Dressed like a mad bumblebee in red and yellow stripes, satin pantaloons and long sleeves, he was part of the small mas band Whip War presented by The Original Jab Jab, led by Ronald Alfred.
At one point, it seemed all the jab jabs were pelting lash, either at each other in mock battles, or at the audience, and the whole air resounded with a crackling like fire.  

The performances of tiny bands like this one gave life and variety to the relentless river of decorated skin that paraded across the Queen’s Park Savannah on Carnival Tuesday. With most of the large bands enjoying the street fete experience, many did little to vary their successful formula of bikini or surf-shorts-type costume designs, except changes of colour or a nominal change in arrangement of feathers, beads or incidental parts.  [Read more]
