RODERICK “CHUCKY” GORDON

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Monday February 16, 2015, CMCRoderick “Chucky” Gordon retained his Calypso Monarch title here on Sunday night joining a list of prominent calypsonians, able to win consecutive titles in Trinidad and Tobago’s premier calypso competition.

His tune “The Rose” took a pot shot at Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissesar and her People’s Partnership government for being able to survive various incidents and a drop in the opinion polls.

“This is how she does manage to tote around all that baggage. Dressed up every day in a fresh set of clothes, don’t mind what is left exposed. Corruption rife and it stifling we nose, Still the PM comes out smelling like a rose,” he sang.

Gordon’s second tune “I Believe” outlined his wishes for Trinidad and Tobago and its ability to bounce back despite the many challenges it faces.

Gordon, won from a field of 11 singers, including Devon Seale whose tune “My Humble Plea” urged the government to demit office and name a date for the general election.

But he lacked the crowd support for this second song “Soul Judges” and had to settle for second place ahead of former monarch, Karene Asche, whose two tunes included the spiritual offering “Every Knee Shall Bow” .

Gordon, who won one million dollars (One TT dollars=US$0.16 cents), joins the list of “bards” including Atila The Hun (1946-1947); Striker (1958-1959); Sparrow (1962-1963, 1972-1974); Duke (1968-1971); and Chalkdust (1976-1977, 2004-2005), who have won consecutive titles in the competition.

The celebrations continue with the parade of costumed carnival bands and will climax on Tuesday with the street jump up.
