Rise of common folk in Brazil, India, Indonesia – commentary

Rise of common folk in Brazil, India, Indonesia

New and popular politicians in the developing world’s largest democracies come from humble origins. This trend reflects an ‘equality of conditions,’ or free societies that come to see dignity in each individual.

Narendra Modi, the newly installed prime minister of the world’s largest democracy, India, is the low-caste son of a tea-stall owner.

Joko Widodo, the president-elect of the third largest democracy, Indonesia, was a furniture maker only a decade ago.

And Marina Silva, the most popular candidate in a presidential race in the fourth largest democracy, Brazil, grew up in poverty in an Amazon jungle town. As a child, she tapped rubber trees and taught herself to read at age 16.

Taken together, the humble origins of these three leaders mark quite a political shift in the developing world’s largest democracies. From their childhoods living on the fringes of society, they are now challenging each country’s tradition of governance by a ruling elite.  [Read more]

    Dont think it would be so easy as this article seem to indicate. Chavis tried to break up the strangle hold of the 5% who owned everything in Venezuela. See the results. These wealthy owners are usually tied to the western capitalist elite and have powerful connections in the west. A leader has to find that middle ground which would help the poor and sell/convince the wealthy that they too will benefit. That is not an easy task and require a great deal of talent. Otherwise tthose greedy capitalist will sabotage the whole program.

      …. if I may add, quite like President Obama of the USA!!

    @Clyde Duncan

    If you still believe Obama was from the common folks, I feel sorry for you. We will never know for sure of his true roots shrouded in so much secrecy. But the story of him being born out of wedlock to a white mother and a black father and raised by his white racist grandmother (especially in a “racist” southern/mid-western state) is pure fiction when you take the realities of American culture during the period of his birth. The reality being that in good Ole America back then, Obama’s mother would have been forced to have an abortion and the child either; given up for adoption, killed (yes, that did happen), or placed in one of those famous govt controlled experimental institutions that Huxley spoke of in Brave New World (yes, those institutions do exist). My money is on the last only because of Biden’s storybook reference. And who better to know than a true “blue blood” – white elitist born and bred insider. So called “gaffes” by these types are never that.

    “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” – Joe Biden

    That is a storybook…”mainstream” or common African-American he ain’t really. He didn’t grow up in the hood and if he did, he was too dumb to get accepted into Columbia and Harvard based on academics, and too poor to get accepted based on wealth. To get into any prestigious college in the US one has to be super smart or super wealthy. He was neither. He is what is know as a Manchurian candidate, a MKULTRA experiment.

      Gigi “……To get into any prestigious college in the US one has to be super smart or super wealthy. He was neither…….”
      Years ago Senator Hubert Humphrey described another politician who was a football quarterback. Before passinng the ball the quarterback had to bend over and look at things through his legs with his head upside down. After many years that was how this politician continued to see the world…..upside down. Since you were no quarterback how did you come to see the world as you do.

      There is no secrecy about Obama’s birth. That was just a right wing invention because they couldn’t come to terms with him being in the White House. Obama was born in 1961. Records of his parents’ marriage and his birth in Hawaii are available. It’s not like he was born in 190 in the South. Gigi continues to mislead and insist on propagating nonsense that she prefers to believe. The most famous is that the Guyana flag should be changed because it is “too African”. Both Gigi and Biden prefer to stereotype Blacks. One person who is definitely “dumber” than Obama could even be.

    gig: You and your white friends ought to know by now, you have a black family in the White House – get over it!!
