Mayor de Blasio Signs Plan For Municipal ID Card Into Law

CBS New York News report – July 10, 2014

Blasio on Thursday July 10, 2014, signed into law a plan to offer a municipal identification card to residents regardless of their immigration status.

The card, dubbed the New York City Identity Card, will be available to anyone who can prove their identity and residency in the city. It is particularly aimed at groups that are currently unable to show a form of government identification required to do things such as cashing a check, signing a lease or even entering office buildings for job interviews or public schools for parent-teacher conferences.  Continue reading

US immigration, legal and otherwise, has always been a barometer of the projected hopes of America’s poorer, less stable southern neighbours. After the 2008 financial crisis immigration to the US – more than half of it originating in Latin America and the Caribbean (up from one-fifth in 1970) – dipped noticeably. Since then “comprehensive immigration reform”, a subject no less divisive than Obamacare, has been a common talking point for both parties, as have debates over such niceties as whether “anchor baby” should be a pejorative term, or “touch-back” remigration required from illegal aliens seeking to regularize their status.
