St Lucia speech Reds Perreira and Guyana Independence – By Sir Ronald Sanders

 Speech by Sir Ronald Sanders

on 31st May 2014
To mark the 48th Anniversary of the Independence of Guyana
and the 75th Birthday of Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira
at an event organised by the Honorary Consul of Guyana in St Lucia
at the Sandals Resort. St. Lucia.

I begin by thanking Lokesh Singh, the Honorary Consul for Guyana in St Lucia, and the organisers of this event, for inviting me to be the guest speaker here this evening.

It is a privilege to address such a distinguished and accomplished audience and to recognise amongst you many friends with whom I have shared a Caribbean life and a regional commitment.

You will understand if, in that process, I identify especially a great St Lucian and Caribbean man whose life-work in academia, in research and writing, in diplomacy, and in the cause of the region’s development, has been an exemplary model to his peers and an inspiration to a generation of West Indian people – Dr Vaughan Lewis.

It is a great pleasure to see him here.

Guyanese Online- Moray House Trust Update – May 2014

Guyanese Online – Update from Moray House Trust – May 2014

May 2014 has been a busy month for the Trust.

On Tuesday 13th May, we hosted an evening of readings by novelist and cricket writer, Rahul Bhattacharya and journalist / historian Gaiutra Bahadur. Rahul and Gaiutra read to a capacity crowd and discussed common themes in their work such as the question of genre, women in Guyanese society, the interplay of fact and fiction, the moral imperative for the writer to present truthfully.

Last year, Gaiutra Bahadur published ‘Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture’. In it, she traces the journey of thousands of women like her great-grandmother Sujaria, a 27 year-old immigrant from Bihar who made the journey to British Guiana as an indentured labourer alone and four months pregnant.

In 2011, Bhattacharya’s novel, ‘The Sly Company of People who Care’, was published to widespread acclaim. In it, he catalogues the adventures of a young Indian journalist in Guyana and depicts with grace, warmth and humour the varied cast of characters and heady cultural mix encountered; the neighbourhood savants, pork-knockers, cane-cutters. “You want bandit, we got bandit,” says one. “We got blackman, redman, buck, chinee, coolie, dougla all lashin each other.”   Continue reading
