 Guyanese Community to Celebrate Guyana’s 48th Independence Anniversary

Guyana will celebrate its 48th Anniversary of Independence on 26th May 2014. In observance of this Special Occasion the Guyanese Community in St Lucia through the Guyana St Lucia Association and in conjunction with the Honorary Consul of Guyana in St Lucia will be hosting a Special Dinner Evening of Celebrations, Food and Entertainment on Saturday 31st May 2014 at the Sandals Halcyon Resort at Choc Bay. At this special occasion the Association will also be taking the opportunity to recognize and honour our distinguished Guyanese and West Indian Sports Icon – Joseph “Reds” Perreira as he celebrates his 75th Birthday and for his distinguished service to the development and promotion of Sports in his native Guyana, adopted home St Lucia, the OECS and the wider Caribbean. Mother’s Day. Today in the United States and in some countries around the world, we honor our mothers. We owe our mothers our lives and much more. But all is not rosy for mothers.

We women have been blessed or cursed, perhaps a bit of both, with Nature’s endowment of childbearing and child nurturing. Our role as child bearers is a labor of joy and sorrow, love and pain. We rejoice in our children’s achievements, however small; we suffer when they are sick or injured. If we could, we would take their pain. When they are bullied by their peers, we stand ready to defend them. When they are snatched from us, we find no solace.

For the mothers of over 270 girls kidnapped, almost a month ago…

Pope Francis called for “the legitimate redistribution of economic benefits” on Friday, arguing that the Bible demands an economic system that cares for the “poorest and those most excluded.”

Francis made the comments while speaking before a gathering of several United Nations agency leaders, including U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. As he reflected on the U.N.’s target for Future Sustainable Development Goals, the first Latin American pope asked those present to resist participating in an “economy of exclusion” and to strive to have “a real impact on the structural causes of poverty and hunger.”   Continue reading
