Lewis Hamilton is on Pole position [P1] Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix this weekend; equalling the Great Jim Clark’s record as Britain’s best qualifier in Formula 1 events.

In 1968, Clark was killed in a race accident in Germany after asserting himself as the greatest Formula 1 driver by winning more Grand Prix races [25]; and achieving more Grand Prix pole positions [33] than any other race driver at the time of his death.

The father of Lewis Hamilton was born in the UK, but Lewis’ grandparents are from Grenada. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/formula1/26800514

The race is on Sunday, 30 March 2014

I just picked this up from the Formula 1 website:
Mercedes’ one-two finish in Malaysia with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was not just their first such result of the season, it was also their first one-two finish as a fully-fledged manufacturer team for over 58 years.

Back in 1955 it was Juan Manuel Fangio who led home Silver Arrows team mate Piero Taruffi in the final race of the world championship in Italy. Despite their success, Mercedes withdrew from F1 at the end of the season and did not return with a full works team until 2010. [Mercedes continued to supply engines to teams, however]

Speaking of Lewis Hamilton, the Briton had a rather momentous weekend in Malaysia, recording pole, fastest lap, and an every-lap-led race victory for the very first time in his career. With Rosberg’s every-lap-led victory in Australia, no team other than Mercedes has led a lap in 2014.

Hamilton’s pole was the 33rd of his career, drawing him level with Alain Prost and equalling Jim Clark’s record for a British driver. His win, meanwhile, was the 23rd of his career and enabled him to leapfrog another British world champion, Damon Hill, to move into 12th place on the all-time winners list.

CORRECTION: Lewis Hamilton’s [23] wins are now tied with Nelson Piquet of Brazil – NOT Alain Prost. The other British drivers ahead of Hamilton are Jim Clark [25]; Jackie Stewart [27]; Nigell Mansell [31] wins.

Lewis Hamilton takes maiden Formula One win with Mercedes at Sepang
Defending champion Sebastien Vettel finished third but never had a chance as Hamilton expertly converted his pole position into a dominant drive, to earn the points in the second event of the Formula One season.

I am very excited about what Lewis Hamilton is doing this year. I know it is only the second race. He was the fastest qualifier in the first race, but one of the six cylinders was not firing at the start line on race day; so he was asked to retire to save the engine. If you are interested, the Bahrain Grand Prix is this weekend:
05-06 April 2014 – They are racing at night in Bahrain, much cooler.

The F1 Bahrain Grand Prix weekend of racing has just concluded and the results:
Lewis Hamilton-Nico Rosberg drove a compelling 1-2 victory for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team at the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix today, 06 April 2014. These team-mates [Englishman-German] have been racing each other as children in Go-Kart Racing, and are probably the most entertaining duo in F1 – they race each other, but they know their limitations. This is the third F1 race of the 2014 calendar and Mercedes have led every lap of every race, so far. The F1 China Grand Prix should replicate the same dominance from the Mercedes team in 2-weeks time. However, once the racing returns to Europe – nearer the team bases – when modifications to the chassis and power plants are introduced, then the boring procession [race] may ignite into an entertaining free for all, I believe.
Next race: China Grand Prix 19-20 April 2014

F1 China Grand Prix has just concluded with no change: Lewis Hamilton-Nico Rosberg 1-2 victory for the Mercedes team, and continuing their dominance by qualifying for Pole position [Hamilton] and leading every lap of every 2014 race, so far. The competition will close the gap now that the teams will be closer to home base in Europe for the next 3-weeks. Next race: 10-11 May 2014 in Spain.
