The recent haute couture show of preeminent Guyanese fashion designer Donna Ramsammy-James was fashion poetry in motion. The pieces were whimsical in style, colorful in glorious splendor and gorgeous on the bodies of the models.

This was one of the best collections ever unveiled by the designer who for the last fifteen year has given her private audience a reason to stand and applause. Muujiza wa Amani, meaning -“magic of peace”- was the themed 2014 collection that captured Ramsammy-James’ designing sensibilities, her multi ethnic roots, and more so, her love of Africa where she lived for many years.   Continue reading

Nor entirely unexpectedly, and almost simultaneous with an IMF statement recommending strong measures to deal with a continuing, major fiscal deficit, the Government of Barbados has announced a series of financial and economic measures, the severity of which must undoubtedly have surprised the population.

Perhaps, the most shocking policy measure has been the decision to lay off 3000 public service workers between now and March 2014, of which only 500 will result from natural retirement.  For the remaining government servants, there will be a freeze on increments, and from the beginning of next year, Members of Parliament will take a ten per cent pay cut, and the travel budgets of ministries will be cut by fifty per cent.  Continue reading

Breaking up can get nasty, more so for the rich and famous. How many of us have not only cut former lovers or partners from our lives, but also from our photos?

The literary acclaimed Scottish writer, Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) – who gave us Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde – was not immune to such behavior. He went even further. He obliterated his one-time friend and step-son-in-law, Joseph Dwight Strong (1853-1899), an American artist, from the Stevenson family history.

What crime had Joseph Strong committed to have deserved such wrath?
