BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (BGIS) — Barbados minister of tourism and international transport, Richard Sealy, has stressed that the Airline Passenger Duty (APD) imposed on persons travelling from Britain to the Caribbean is a major hindrance, forcing potential visitors to choose non-regional destinations.

He made this assertion during a courtesy call on Monday from High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Barbados, Victoria Dean, at his ministry’s headquarters.  Continue reading

A new US policy for the Americas

Last week the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, spelt out a new US policy for the Americas. In a major address in Washington, he confirmed the approach that took hold during President Obama’s first term, formally drew a line under the Cold War, and set aside, hopefully forever, the interventionist thinking that has underwritten US policy towards the hemisphere since 1823.
His remarks also gave prominence to US thinking on Cuba, making clear that the new policy also applied to relations with Havana.

Speaking at an event co-sponsored by the Inter-American Dialogue and the Organization of American States on November 18, the Secretary of State declared that the era of the Monroe Doctrine was over and that the United States will no longer seek to intervene in the affairs of other American states. The US was moving on, he said, and was making a different choice.   Continue reading

Trinis eligible for same incentives as Guyanese under agri MoU

The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between Guyana and Trinidad on food security aims to provide investors from Port-of-Spain with the same agricultural incentives, subsidies and exemptions from taxes and duties available to Guyanese.

Under the September 6th MoU signed by Agriculture Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy and his Trinidadian counterpart Devant Maharaj, land will be leased by private investors from Trinidad “for the pursuit of agricultural production, including agro-processing, and generally in providing a facilitative environment and the necessary support to attract such investments”.
