One of the many mounds of garbage in the Stabroek Market area

New ‘War’ Strategy at Georgetown City Hall – By Francis Quamina Farrier

It seems as though the continuous lamentations emitting from the office of the mayor of the capital city of Guyana, Georgetown, might soon be coming to an end.

For the Christmas season, His Worship Mayor Hamilton Green, JP, has announced that he will be heading a team of volunteers to clean up the Stabroek Market area of all the garbage which is usually there, much to the disgust of many citizens.

The on-going ‘war’ between the mayor and the acting Town Clerk, Carol Sooba, has reached an unacceptable level and citizens are in no way amused. Especially with the government constantly promoting tourism. “Which sane tourist would want to visit a garbage-filled city?” is the question many citizens ask. Others feel that it is very unfair to them that the City Council and the Ministry of Local government are constantly at ‘war’ with each other and lots of finger pointing going on.

Mayor Hamilton Green is a very unpopular mayor at this time of his political career. So, too, the acting Town Clerk, Carol Sooba, who seems not to be inclined to work in collaboration with the mayor for the benefit of citizens. So, next Saturday morning, November 30, Mayor Hamilton Green and his team of volunteers, will be out in full force to clean up the Stabroek Market area.

Minister of Local Government, Hon. Ganga Persaud, MP, told me that he will support any clean-up campaign of the city. Meanwhile, word has it that the Ministry of Human Service & Social Security, will be moving from that garbage riddled area near the Stabroek Market, and will move in to the now vacated (former) Headquarters of the Guyana Revenue Authority at the corner of Lamaha and East Streets.  (END)

Q: Who is responsible for this mess? A: The Mayor who has not done his job and who is one of the most feared persons in G/town. Get a New Mayor…A young, progressive, ambitious person with a love of G/town and a goal to make G/town a world class city.

    Guyana’s dilemma….devil you do devil you don’t….
So HRH Lord Mayor is taking to the streets….how humiliating
for such a high ranking officer to be humbled in this way.
I question HRH motive….public sympathy or public awareness.

If/when the clean up is successfully accomplished will it deter
the “fly tipping” “litter bugs” from returning/dumping again.
The alternative was to provide bins for the dumping of rubbish
and make sure they are emptied before they overflow.
If facilities are provided am sure public will respond positively.
Does the City of GT not have waste disposal vehicle for the collection
of waste ? If not what/where does the taxes it collects go towards…
If it cannot collect TAXES efficiently cannot see how it can spend
it wisely. Waste not want not !
Garden city may need a name change to “garbage” city.

Sad state of affairs indeed. !

Hey this is 21st century not 19th century….let please move forward.

    Respectfully

Hamilton Green has always proven to be incompetent. I don’t think he is even capable of running a cake shop, much-less the beautiful city of Georgetown. Employ chartered or certified accountants to run the city like a business. Vote for a professional to manage GT.

SOME years ago John Fernandes Ltd Organized business owners to sponsor bins to be placed in the Stabroek area. This effort was turned down because the names of the firm would be on the bins.

Maybe Guyana will be invaded by economic migrants (aliens) from their neighbours…..Texas spends millions turfing out illegals (economic migrants) aliens only for OBAMA to grant them amnesty….the Latinos voted him
into his second term as president….he did not forget that fact.
Spending millions on keeping out “economic migrants” is counter productive.
You simply legalise them and monitor their numbers/movements/integration/tax paying abilities ….the technology is a fraction of the enforcement costs.
America was built by economic migrants tax paying abilities/contributions.
Today Euroland is realising that the free movement of peoples/goods/services is
the way forward….is healthy for economic growth…..
How naive politicians are in their nationalistic desire for power….

My vision is a world without borders …a world with monitored borders.
We have the technology …use it….

The Stabroek Market clock – an icon of Guyana itself. Compare the picture above with the images shown here.
