Bishop Austin

Anglican Bishop Dr. William Piercy Austin

Honoring our heritage must be as natural as breathing for it is indeed the foundation on which you stand. Many great individuals of early British Guiana have been lost to the fog of history but the legacy of Anglican Bishop Dr. William Piercy Austin lives on in Guyana. Bishop William Piercy Austin’s ideas and diligent contributions gave rise to the academic pursuits in Guyana for which he is recognized as one of the most outstanding individuals in the history of the Colony of    British Guiana.

William Piercy Austin was born at a small inn in Stone, Stafford, England, on the November 7, 1807. He was a son of William Austin {1759-1817} and Mehetabel Piercy {1782-1852} of Plantation Land of Plenty, in Essequibo, and in his youth spent some years in the colony. He was educated at Hyde Abbey School, near Winchester, from whence he proceeded to Exeter College, Oxford .

Arguably the tallest wooden structure in the world and serves as a magnificent example of architectural heritage and one of the best preserved in Guyana

Thanks for bringing Lord Bishop Austin to life. I knew nothing about him. We are truly indebted to him for his contributions to the colony.

Love the photo (?) of Croal Street in 1910. Beautiful scene.

    Hi Dimitri,

My father sent me the link to your article. He always sends us links to information regarding Bishop William Piercy Austin. He is my Great Great Grandfather. His son Charles Joseph Austin is my Great Grandfather and his youngest daughter Bellona Austin is my Grandmother. Bellona is still alive, she lives in London and has seven children.

I’ve recently started to try and track back some of my family history and would love to know more about Bishop Austin and my heritage. I have lived in the UK my whole life and have never visited Guiana but I will soon. Any other information you have or could direct me too would be most helpful. Thank you.

That is wonderful Nathan, It is an honor to meet you, a descendant of Bishop Austin- Guyana celebrates his legacy in education, the St George’s Cathedral, the Anglican Church and Austin House – his home, that is still there and well maintained. I know of him thru public knowledge and history of British Guiana. Stay in touch.
