It is a truism that “man cannot live by bread alone”. So, when young, Minister Frank Anthony spoke, he took us momentarily to a celestial plane where our Guyanese civilization could bask in reflected glory in the finest tradition of literature and art.  His was a breath of fresh air, and I felt a soothing balm of hope that we could all discover our better Angels, and that we could, in our life-time, show “what Guyana sons and daughters can be”.

It is a lofty dream to enrich our civilization with cultural and intellectual values, whilst we pursue economic security. But, in this land of cuss-down politics, our masters “watch us sleep and aim at our dreams”, to paraphrase our national poet, Martin Carter.   Continue reading

ncnlogoThe APNU has signalled that it will once again be cutting budget allocations for the state-run National Communications Network (NCN) in a repeat of last year’s action.This was disclosed by MP Joseph Harmon when the week-long debate on the 2013 budget estimates continued Friday.“In this budget the minister allocates 81 million dollars to NCN, this is an entity’s allocation, Madame Speaker, (Deborah Backer) we will not support,” he declared.

Harmon, whose shadow portfolio covers communication, said information minister President Donald Ramotar must release a report into financial irregularities at NCN.

The parliamentarian noted that APNU Chairman and Leader of the Opposition David Granger had written the president twice seeking the outcome of the probe.    Continue reading

The ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic is warning against cuts to the 2013 Budget and Estimates, describing any such action as reckless and irresponsible.

But at the same time, the opposition is maintaining that they are not constrained to amend any aspects of the estimates. The opposition also said that Parliament continues to enjoy the same powers it had last year, when it slashed allocations to several agencies, despite the CJ’s ruling.

The opposition, both APNU and AFC, threatened to cut what they called, unnecessary allocations to various Ministerial and Governmental agencies.  Continue reading

Plaisance residents insist that they will not allow the Government to set up a tower on playfield

April 8, 2013 (Capitol News)  – The Government is trying to cool the tempers of Plaisance residents, who vowed to put a permanent halt to the construction of the e-governance tower on the community playground.

The Government sent in its Junior Finance Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill, to meet with the residents, but his best efforts to get his Government’s message across fell on deaf ears.

Plaisance resident and politician, Aubrey Norton, quizzed the Minister on why the playfield was chosen for the project; he was dissatisfied with the response given.    Continue reading

A Jamaica-headquartered conglomerate is eyeing the running of yet another fibre-optic cable to Guyana and getting a “toe-hold” in the financial services sector, a top official of Portland Holdings said Tuesday.
