The man who will always be known as the  the Mighty Sparrow, received a standing ovation when he came on to the stage at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), in Port of Spain on Saturday evening, September 21, 2012.
But the event which featured a dramatision of some of Sparrow’s calypsoes by various artistes had some unscheduled drama which saw him take a fall to the side of the stage and he had to be assisted to his feet, but he was not ill and he was unharmed and was able to continue his performance.              [Salt-fish music video at end] Continue reading

Surinamese authorities seize Guyanese and Venezuelan fishing vessels

The issue of illegal fishing is once again being highlighted, with the reported seizure of Guyanese and Venezuelan fishing vessels by Surinamese authorities. A report out of Suriname earlier this week, accused its Eastern and Western neighbours, Guyana and Venezuela, of cleaning out its fishing grounds as a result of illegal fishing . The report in a Surinamese newspaper, pointed to the use of illegal methods to fish and announced that several vessels have been confiscated by Surinamese authorities, and crews were arrested and even deported.   Continue reading

As Assistant Superintendent, Patrick Todd, who was in charge of the TSU on the day of the Linden shooting continued on the stand today, he testified that he did all the shooting of the shotguns and throwing of the tear smoke canisters. He said, he never shot at the crowd but shot down to the road so that it could ricochet in the direction of the crowd. When grilled about why he took it upon himself to do all the shooting and throwing of tear gas, he said, he had more trust in himself; that the members of his unit were not experienced enough. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today announced that the Government of Brazil has given its approval for  Merlin Udho to be appointed as Ambassador of Guyana to Brazil. She will succeed Kellawan Lall.

Udho had previously served as Ambassador of Guyana to Suriname from November 2009 to February 2012.  A release from the Ministry said that she previously worked as a Consultant in the UN system serving in the Ukraine, Bangladesh and Eastern Europe and as the Coordinator of the National Competitiveness Programme.  Continue reading

Watch the BMWs squeeze their way in, and the glitzy crowd walk quickly from chauffeur-driven car into fancy restaurant or fancier boutique, noses covered with handkerchief!

There is no experience more sobering for the perfumed than a walk down the inner lane of Khan Market — it stinks. Khan Market has become the latest metaphor for private wealth and public squalor in urban India.

Guyana’s main exposition Guyexpo 2012 opens – video

Guyana’s main exposition, Guyexpo, opened  on Thursday September 27,at the Exhibition Centre Sophia with acting President, Sam Hinds, hailing the event as one to celebrate all we have worked for.

He urged Guyanese to work together and to challenge each other to do better. The acting President said, that Guyana has come a long way since independence and has recognized the need for growing our manufacturing sector.   Continue reading
