When Brown people think they are White

When Brown people think they are White

The confusion is also visible in the question of race and heritage. The Census Bureau is insisting on forcing people who speak Spanish to write in Hispanic or Latino, which are European cultural heritages.

Most of peoples in the so called Latin America are of Indigenous (Native) and African heritages, and the mix of both with others including Europeans, Asian, Arab, etc. But we ignore our true heritage, due to the Euro-centric educational system and a racist corporate media. We prefer to say we are White instead of accepting our true heritages, because for many is painful and even shameful to remember who we are.

Shaping identities: Young Hispanics don’t fit into distinct categories

By Marissa Mitchell

Hispanic? Latino? Mexican? Puerto Rican?

Black? White? Some other race?

These are just a few of the ways young Latinos can identify themselves on the U.S. Census form, which is often confusing because it separates race from ethnicity.

Hispanics make up about 18 percent of all youths in the U.S. ages 16-25, and of that group, two-thirds are native-born Americans, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. These young Latinos straddle two cultures, creating a sense of identity that is complex and sometimes surprising. Clearly, one label doesn’t fit all.

Young Latinos straddle two cultures, creating a sense of identity that is complex and sometimes surprising.

Hispanics are projected to make up one-third of the U.S. population by 2050, if current rapid growth rates continue. That projection could fluctuate 50 percent in one direction or the other, however, because of the self-identification option on the census form and the increase in interracial and interethnic marriages, says the Pew Hispanic Center’s senior demographer Jeffrey Passel.

Wow! that would be the greatest achievement after the abolition of slavery. It would be a wonderful world when the Europeans (whites) are less than 50%. Can you imagine them being the minority? the first time in their Life and the beginning of their demise.

    • chandra  On August 15, 2012 at 2:48 am

Punambolam, I am disappointed by your attitude towards your fellow men in that you would bask in what you foolishly term the demise of the white race. They really are presently the minority race, however, they are still holding strong. I am assuming that you are not white and if that is true how does your race compare to the white race economically and otherwise? And, would you be better off if they are gone and your race dominate? Be honest.

The beginning of “their” demise. This shows the ignorance of Leonard Josephs argument. Demise is not a proper attitude towards finding a civil relationship between all cultures and races. As simple as it is, we need to look beyond colour and do what is right for all people.

Leonard, I suggest you spend more time on your computer and research some more. It seems as though you have a lot of time on your hands to have a pessimistic attitude with having no positive influence. Do yourself a favour and be careful what you write online, comments like these cannot be erased online and can affect more than yourself.

      Sincerely,

      Alex

There is only one race,The Human Race whether you want to believe or not;it does not matter.

    • Dark Star  On August 18, 2012 at 11:24 pm

I am 100% with Rita’s perspective. This whole dust-up about race is simply an invention to allow one group of people to ill-treat another group with a clear conscience.

The first thing you see when you see a person is the color of their skin. When we look instead for the person within the skin, instead of seeing a walking laundry-list of stereotypes based on that visual signal, is when we’ll start acting like the intelligent animals we’re supposed to be. Unfortunately, our history is not very encouraging in this regard.

The Political people in this world will be looking for jobs tomorrow if the race bogey is not perpetuated and fed the fuel by them. They strive on the race card and cannot do otherwise. There is only one race says the Spiritual People of the world and that is the HUMAN RACE. That is why there is the separation of the powers of the State, Executive and the CHURCH everywhere in this world.

I know, because I can masquerade as White but I know my true ROOTS. Ms. Mitchell is right on target when she addressed the topic of Race and Ethnicity because the 2011 Census allowed Black people to renounce their true heritage.
No one wants to be Black anymore and would do anything to reject their Black grandparent, even their cultural history.

  • ken corsbie  On August 18, 2012 at 10:57 pm

    .. and
when brown people think they are black !!!
WoW!! how disgraceful.. they’d be denything their brownness.. black is NOT brown no matter the culture or the society or history or rascists think.. to deny half of your heritage is to deny either a father or a mother or a grandfather or a grandmother.. so it go..
I’m brown or red or whatever you wish to call me.. but I’M NOT BLACK AND I’M NOT WHITE AND I’M NOT YELLOW AND I’M NOT RED..
actually, I lie.. I’m ALL OF THE ABOVE, and so glad for iit..not proud, but glad. beause I don’t have to carry the monkey of one or the other on my back..

  • Cyril Balkaran  On August 19, 2012 at 6:57 am

Haven’t you Guys ever heard that Black is Beautiful? Why would anyone in their right senses would want to shy away from anything Beautiful.
You must have heard of Black Gold, haven’t you. Well since the discovery of the black gold some 100 years ago the ecosystems and fossil fuel systems have all gone crazy and the environment is paying the price for our love of the Black Gold.

    hear hear !
WE ARE ALL MEMBERS OF THE “human race”

PEOPLE OF COLOUR ….like the rainbow !

Race is used as a political tool just as “Class” is…
Religion is also a very abused political weapon.
Lets leave race to “history” lessons in school and not
use it to describe “cultural differences”
If I was born in a ZOO with gorillas I would grow up to be a
gorilla…fortunately I was born in a village and grew up in a village eventually moving to the city GEORGETOWN then to
many other cities in my travels.
Today I am wiser for it !

some of the remarks above were interesting and some even funny.

I describe myself as a person of colour…excitingly colourful.
never boring ! ha ha !

Talking about funniness, now Eusi Kwayana has given us food for thought. He has indicated that all our genes and DNA studies indicated that we all came from Africa in the beginnings of time. I thought that we inherited some Ethiopian Genes due to our similarities. Let’s think it over, our elderly statesman may have a unifying point in this natural debate. Funny or no funny it has some merit, Kamptan.

According to anthropologists, there are only 3 races.
They are: Caucasian races (Aryans, Hamites, Semites); Mongolian races (northern Mongolian, Chinese and Indo-Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Tibetan, Malayan, Polynesian, Maori, Micronesian, Eskimo, American Indian); Negroid races (African, Hottentots, Melanesians/Papua, “Negrito”, Australian Aborigine, Dravidians, Sinhalese). Some anthropologista also include a 4th race called Australoid found mostly in Asia. Native American is not classified as a separate race.

Here are two video that were featured in this Blog some time ago relating to “races” and the new DNA findings, which is now debunking much of what we knew before…. Basically … there is really no such thing as race… as all mankind came from the same DNA base.
We do not have to believe it but that is what the DNA strands are saying.

Search for the videos on this Guyanese Online BLOG:

    – These two videos show how recently science, and especially GENETICS (our DNA), has re-written the history of mankind. We are all AFRICANS as all mankind migrated from East Africa some 60,000 years ago after the great ice age.

Agreed. There is no such thing as race ‘scientifically’ speaking. However, when used as a social construct, i.e., for social categorization, as this article is attempting to do. Then the article should adhere to the categories or labels defined in said social constructs.

welcome gigi for the interlectual input…
I support the idea that we all came from “equatorial” areas of the planet and as we move further north or south out “colour” became diluted….my common sense approach to scientific “speculation” !
The mediterrean was once a desert until “hercules” unblocked it with GIBRALTAR….as per historians….
I also accept the “BIG BANG” thesis !
In religion I was taught that the “world would end in FIRE” this time not “WATER”…as per NOA s ARK….yes the planet earth can be “pulled” into the SUN…also other planets in our solar system…and there are millions out there.
    maybe even “aliens” ha ha!
And if I was an alien I would certainly avoid planet earth as a planet to set up home. even more ha ha ! been watching too many sci-fi movies lately.

congratulations for that rebuke Alexandre……hope Leonard accepts by not responding….a “no response” can be considered acceptance of the rebuke.
Yes when thoughts are put into words…and then written it becomes history.
Lets hope “racism” remains an historical fact.
