The Diaspora and Guyana

The intense interest that people in the Diaspora show in Guyana is understandable, but at the same time something to cause raised eyebrows. For starters, there are those who send money (make remittances) to their relatives back home. This, perhaps, is the most popular sign that people have a lot to think about when it comes to their homeland.

This is not common to Guyana, but given the size of the population, remittances are huge. According to figures released by the Inter-American Development Bank, two years ago Guyanese remitted some US$447 million.

But that is only the cash. The people in the Diaspora look for other ways of helping the country. Nurses would collect material that they believe is needed by the various medical institutions and post them. But for the most part, they would travel to Guyana on their vacation and deliver these things which are always well received by the Ministry of Health. And the travel is done at no cost to the government.           Continue reading

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Monday, August 6, 2012 – While superstar songstress Rihanna was expected home for the climax of Barbados’ annual Crop Over carnival celebrations few knew that this year she would be accompanied by a special guest.

None other than talk-show queen Oprah Winfrey joined the 24-year-old hit maker on a tour of the Caribbean island, filming shots along Barbados’ famed ‘platinum coast’ on the west of the island, as well as some urban elements from Rihanna’s more humble beginnings. These shots are expected to be used in previews and scenes for an August 19 airing of “Oprah’s Next Chapter” where Winfrey will interview the Barbadian beauty.         Continue reading

Caribbean Carnival unleashes loud and joyous spirits

Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival 2012

The colours were bright and the temperatures hot for both dancers and spectators during the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival 2012 on the Lake Shore Saturday afternoon. More than 400,000 were on hand for the annual festival.

They came like Frisbees, flying through the air and into the eager hands of adults and children alike: red beaded necklaces, being flung out and hung around the necks of most who lined Lake Shore Blvd. W. to watch the city’s 45th annual Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival.

A woman who looked to be in her 60s leapt into the air for her necklace, giggling like a little girl and clutching it tightly.

As the mas bands began appearing, another grey-haired woman began gyrating her hips and shaking her shoulders back and forth in time with the music.    Continue reading
