FULL STORY | | …protest action may have pushed him out
Yesterday staffers and representatives from the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association took their protest action to office of the Pro Chancellor, Prem Misir at the Parliamentary Office. And before the protest there was word that UG Chancellor Professor Compton Bourne had resigned. According to Dr. Melissa Ifill, Vice President of the UGSSA, the UGSSA welcomes the resignation.
“We have been advised that Mr. Bourne has resigned. It has been something that we have been calling for because we have argued that he has in fact not functioned effectively as Chancellor. We have called for his resignation and we are pleased. We see this as a victory.” [more]

I would prefer not to interfere with the Politics of the University. But somehow the Professors of the University are highly respected and highly paid officials of the Institution and I wonder what went wrong in the case Pro Compton, our esteemed Chancellor of the UG. Is this the first time that a Chancellor of UG is forced to quit since the establishment of this University in 1960 or thereabouts?
I remember the South African, Professor Hogben and head of the English Department in the University of Durban, SA. was invited to spearhead and oversee the establishment of UG in the early 1960’s. This was at a time of great political turmoil in Guyana, and the entire establishment was referred to as “Dr. Jagan’s Night School.” by his political opponents at that time, History is History. It is heartening to note that the evolution of UG as a Regional Institution has served the region and its Acamedia so well after some 52 years and is continuing to do so at a pace that is dictated by its National and Regional standings. I hope that the situation is resolved shortly and that UG continues to shine as a regional Institution with a Chancellor in place!
