Celebrating Guyana in an awesome way

The Nation’s 46th Anniversary together with the capital city of Georgetown’s bi-centennial was celebrated at a glittering and festive event with an over capacity crowd at The Brooklyn Borough Hall on June 08, 2012, that was organized by Patricia Jordon-Langford and the Committee of The Guyana Tri-State Alliance, The Guyana Consulate, and the Guyana Mission under the patronage of New York City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn, with Council Member Mathieu Eugene, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

The Golden Arrowhead Award of Distinction was awarded by The Guyana Tri-State Alliance, Inc., Consulate of Guyana and The Guyana Missions, along with a presentation of a proclamation from the City Council by Council Man Mathieu Eugene and a Citation from The Office of the President of the Borough of Brooklyn by Deputy Borough President Guyanese Sandra Chapman , to Guyanese who have distinguished themselves in Media – Film, Radio, TV, Music and other forms of communication.             

The prominent Honorees,  were- film and TV director/Actor Marc Gomes, Radio producer and commentator Angela Massiah, TV producer/ director, and TV personality, Tanuja Raghoo, Ohio University school of media arts, Prof. Vibert Cambridge, Film Director\actress Rhona Fox, Master Drummer Vincent ( Jeggae) Hoppie, Steel drum Pioneer Rudy Bishop, King of the drums Akoyaw Rudder, Film Producers\Directors Mason Richards, Paloma Mohamed, Mohamed Shivraj, Clairmont Chung, Major (Rtd) Mike Charles and Special Honoree Francis Farrier for over 50 years of Media service in Guyana.

In addition, Borough President Marty Markowitz declared a Proclamation, which was presented to Patricia Jordon-Langford, President of The Guyana Tri-State Alliance, Inc proclaiming Friday June 08, the 46th Anniversary of the Independence of Guyana, Celebration day in Brooklyn, USA.

Eleven-year-old Victoria Labban brought the crowd to their feet, some in tears at her moving and powerful rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I will always Love You” that belied her 11 years, truly a” Star is born”, “A fusion of Cultures” celebrating Unity in Guyana with a pulsating beat of Afro drums and Tassa Drummers with Dancers Amanda Rambaran,  Kavita Tajeshwar, Ahsley Walter, Nahze Lovell, Tshana Reid, and Jade Scott Choreographed and directed by the legendary Choreographer, and Director of Dance Verna Walcott, with assistance from Lisa Chaliha.  The performance of togetherness and unity was truly impressive.

His Excellency George Talbot, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, was the key note speaker and chronicled the achievements of Guyana and the movement of Guyana towards a global economy to cheers from the vast audience. Bobby Vieira, and Rozanna Beaumont who were the MC’s kept the program moving, and seamless.

Arti Cameron Miss Guyana World was regal and beautiful, and was presented with gifts from The Guyana Tri-State Alliance member Ms Yvonne Marcus and Ms Hollis Barclay CEO of Hibiscus Spa.

Guyanese premier restaurants Sybil’s, Kaieteur, The Nest, The Hills, Linda’s and Orrin’s Catering, provided special mouthwatering Guyanese Cuisine at “A Taste of Guyana Reception” together with Demerara Distillers Ltd that provided an atmosphere of delight that gave a “back home feeling” while films on Guyana “Yours to Discover” produced by Guyanese Major (rtd) Mike Charles was screened throughout the evening.

A Beautiful evening of “meet ups” of old friends, camaraderie and togetherness were the Spirit throughout the evening, that ended with a feeling of Pride of Heritage and Home.
