Guyana government rolls out laptop distribution programme


Guyana will have an estimated 57,000 laptops under the initiative by year end.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Wednesday November 9, 2011 – Just around 1,000 Guyanese families received Netbook computers on Tuesday as government commenced the distribution phase of its One Laptop Per Family programme.

An additional 4,000 computers would be handed out from today at various areas throughout the country.

Jagdeo amassing great wealth to buy loyalty – Ramjattan


The current Bharrat Jagdeo administration is being accused of accumulating and amassing great wealth which it uses to buy the loyalty of supporters and to punish opponents.
This observation was made by Alliance For Change Presidential Candidate Khemraj Ramjattan, who described Guyana’s democracy as ‘Sultanistic’, which he said will unravel so quickly that even the ‘Sultan’ will be befuddled.
Ramjattan was addressing students of the University of Guyana during a presidential town hall-style forum that was organized by the university’s Department of Government and International Affairs.                     Continue reading

Demerara Waves – November 10, 2011

Billions of dollars for the university, a fairer business environment and universal secondary education were some of the promises made to students and faculty of the University of Guyana (UG) when the first ever Presidential Candidates’ Discourse was held in a packed lecture theatre at the Turkeyen campus on Thursday.

The event, organised by the Department of Governnance and International Relations, attracted all four of the candidates, namely the PPP/C’s Donald Ramotar, AFC’s Khemraj Ramjattan, APNU’s David Granger and TUF’s Paul Persaud.

They were each given 15 minutes to make presentations after which questions were allowed from students and staff in the audience. However, only four questions were fielded with the moderator Paulette Paul stating that there were restrictions on the candidates’ time.  more

The University of Guyana on Thursday held the long-awaited 2011 General Election Presidential Candidates Forum at the Turkeyen Campus. Organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Department of Governance and International Relations, the packed George Walcott Lecture Theatre heard presentations from the presidential candidates.

They are David Granger of the opposition coalition- A Partnership for National Unity (APNU); Peter Persaud of The United Force (TUF); Khemraj Ramjattan of the Alliance For Change (AFC) and Donald Ramotar of the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC).
